Salvaterra de Magos is a municipality in the Portuguese district of Santarém. The population in 2011 was 12,397, in an area of 106.06 km². The municipality includes several towns, the largest and seat being Salvaterra de Magos. The present Mayor is Paulo Pisco, elected by the Social Democratic Party. The municipal holiday is May 3. The economy of the municipality is based on agriculture (especially cereals, fruits, and wine), livestock, industry (manufacturing of shoes, clothing, and paper), and tourism. The municipality Salvaterra de Magos is located in the Oeste subregion of Portugal, in the district of Santarém. It has an area of 106,06 km² and a population of 12 397 inhabitants (2011). The Salvaterra de Magos municipality includes several towns, the largest and seat being Salvaterra de Magos. The municipality is crossed by the Alentejo Highway (IP 1) and by the Magistral Road 318. It is served by Salvaterra de Magos railway station on the Beira Alta line. Salvaterra de Magos was once part of the old Vila Nova de São Pedro doEstremoz Municipality. In 1836, it became a freguesia (civil parish) of the Tancos Municipality. On May 3, 1886, it was elevated to the status of vila (town) and on November 27, 1887, it became a municipality. The municipal holiday is May 3, in honor of the Blessed Virgin Mary, under the invocation of Our Lady of the Conception, the patron saint of the municipality. The economy of the municipality is based on agriculture (especially cereals, fruits, and wine), livestock, industry (manufacturing of shoes, clothing, and paper), and tourism. Salvaterra de Magos has a hospital, a health center, a library, a Museum, a secondary school, and a vocational school. The municipality is home to a number of historical and cultural sites, such as the Igreja Matriz (the Parish Church), the Convento de São Francisco (the Convent of Saint Francis), and the Casa dos Condes de Azevedo (the House of the Counts of Azevedo). The municipality has a number of sports facilities, including a football stadium, a municipal pool, and tennis courts.
